Troubleshooting Tesla Steering Wheel Vibration [Fixes + Tips!]

Have you ever faced a little shake when holding the steering wheel? If yes, it’s a big issue that may be signaling something is wrong.

The Tesla steering wheel vibration occurs due to unbalanced tires, Lane Departure Avoidance (LDA) set to Warning mode, loose foam in tires, and bad wheel bearings. To fix that, rotate the tires, set the LDA to Assist mode, remove the foam, and change the wheel bearing.

Don’t worry if the procedure is unknown to you as I’ll describe these in this guide with prevention tips. Let’s Go!

Troubleshooting Tesla Steering Wheel Vibration

The Reasons Behind Tesla Steering Wheel Vibration

If your Tesla’s steering wheel seems to shake or wiggle a lot, then the first thing you’ll need to do is to find the causes. Under this segment, I’ll share the reasons behind this:

Cause #1: Tire Balance Issue

In case your Tesla steering shakes at high speed, know that it’s occurring due to of balance tire. To simplify it, the tires of the car can get out of balance over time.

For that reason, Tesla suggests rotating tires every 6,250 miles (10,000 kilometers) or when the tread depth is 1.5mm (2/32″) or greater.

As tires get unbalanced, it causes the car parts like the steering wheel and seat to shake at 50 – 65 MPH or higher speed.

Cause #2: Lane Departure Avoidance Is Turned on Warning

The Tesla steering wheel vibration on lane assist is happening as the Lane Departure Avoidance feature is not activated or set to the Warning option. To give a warning, the steering wheel will vibrate if the option is set to Warning and shake a little when you change the lane.

Cause #3: Foam in Tires Is Loose

Another reason the steering wheel vibrates or wiggles during driving is due to loosening out foam in one or more tires. When this occurs, the tires cause the steering yoke or wheel to vibrate and shake a lot.

Cause #4: Faulty Wheel Bearing

When the wheel bearing which holds the tire or wheel on the front or rear side is broken, the car will shake. Even if it’s rare, still the car’s steering wheel vibrates to indicate an issue with the wheel bearing.

If the Tesla steering wheels fall off from the column while shaking, it indicates the core bolt is broken or missing. Be sure to replace or add the core bolt to tighten it out.

How To Fix Vibration in Tesla Steering Wheel?

Once you find the root cause of the steering wheel wiggling, immediately troubleshoot the bug. To do that, here’s the direction:

Fix #1: Rotate the Tires & Configure Them

To begin the process, you’ll need a lug nut socket that is 21mm in size. After that, detect the tire condition in the front and rear sides.

For that, notice the treadwear pattern, position, and condition. Then, go to Controls > Suspension > Jack and then insert the jacks near 4 tires to lift the car.

Next, pull out the wheel cover using your hand or pry the bar from the tire. After that, remove all the nuts that hold the tires to the wheel and then detach the tires as well.

Now, swap the driver’s side tires (insert the front one to the rear and the rear one to the front) and the passenger side tires (attach the opposite one).

And then, put on all the nuts into the respective spots and tighten them out. Ensure that the torque of nuts is 129 lb. ft (175 Nm). After that, insert the wheel covers back into their places.

Lastly, update the car’s tire configuration (go to Controls > Service > Wheel & Tire Configuration > Tires). That’ll help your car to reset the tire settings and improve its performance.

For your Information, the tire rotation will cost around $70 – $100 with the tax on Tesla Mobile Service.

Project Time: 30 – 40 Minutes (Max).

Fix #2: Turn ON Lane Departure Avoidance Option

Start by using the touchscreen and click on Controls > Autopilot > Lane Departure Avoidance and then select the Assist option.

Turn ON Lane Departure Avoidance Option

That way you’ll get a corrective steering notice or alert instead of a vibration on the steering wheel.

Project Time: 5 Minutes (Max).

Fix #3: Remove Loosen Foam from the Tires

You’ll need to find out the tires that contain loose foam in. After that, remove the tires from the Tesla as I’ve described before.

Then, remove the black tread or rim from the wheel using slight force. After that, detach the loosened glued part of noise-dampening foam to the tires and then put them on to the car. The process is pretty simple, but I’d suggest not to try it by yourself if you can’t.

Project Time: 10 – 15 Minutes (Max).

Fix #4: Change the Wheel Bearing

To start the process, go to Controls > Suspension > Jack mode. Then, click on Controls > Service > turn on the Tow Mode. Next, insert jacks under the car and lift it.

After that, remove all lug nuts and detach the tires (only the problematic ones). Now, you’ll see the wheel bearing in the front.

Use the wrench or log nut socket to remove all the bolts behind the wheel bearing hub. Be patient during this as it takes most of the time.

Ensure that the brake cable is secured. Then, detach the wheel bearing part. To quicken the process, ensure to use WD40 and leave it for 10 minutes so that it comes out easily.

Next, do the opposite of removal to insert the wheel bearing. If the process seems hard and confusing, be sure to get it done on TSC.

Project Time: 40 – 60 minutes (Max).

Tips for Preventing Tesla Steering Wheel Vibration

  • Be sure to rotate the tires every 6,250 miles or 10,000 km which helps the steering wheel to not vibrate.
  • If your tire’s tread depth difference is 1.5mm or higher, then rotate or replace the tires using a proper lug socket. This will help never to face vibration.
  • Always inspect the tires as this is the no.1 reason for the vibration of the steering wheel. If the tires contain serious tear or wear, replace them.
  • Try to adjust the steering wheel each time you have changed the wheel.
  • Inspect the core bolt that holds the steering wheel to the column as this causes shakiness and risk in driving.
