Cadillac Optiq Is GM’s Gamble In The Electric SUV Arena
Cadillac is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio with the all-new 2025 Optiq. Smaller than the Lyriq, the new electric SUV promises luxury and performance — everything we have come to expect from Cadillac. But with the competition growing, the question is: Is it worth the price tag?
Cadillac is betting big on the Optiq. Even the standard version has an all-wheel-drive powertrain pushing an estimated 300 horsepower and a rather serious 354 pound-feet of torque. The Optiq’s Ultium platform provides an 85 kWh battery pack that promises a respectable 300 miles of range. It can reportedly recharge at decent speeds, adding 79 miles in just 10 minutes when using a DC fast charger.
Sizing Up The Competition
Cadillac has priced the Optiq at $54,000, which is one way to make it stand out. For a few thousand less, you could snag a Tesla Model Y Performance, which, while delivering a similar range, offers way more power and comes with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Interestingly, the Cadillac Lyriq is nearly $5,000 more expensive and provides more room, power, and range.
But Optiq has a couple of tricks of its own. It borrows a lot of design from its bigger brother, Lyriq. You get the black crystal grille with a dazzling choreographed lighting sequence, and a fixed glass roof comes standard. The sprawling 33-inch display dominates the luxurious interior. Built-in Google is in charge of the smarts, and a 19-speaker AKG audio system provides an aural experience like no other.
Couple all that with the 116-inch wheelbase, best-in-class cargo space, and the standard Super Cruise with a complete suite of driver-assist goodies, and you have one fully kitted-out electric Cadillac. The $54,000 price tag may be a tough pill to swallow, but Cadillac doesn’t seem too bothered about it.
A Promising Contender But…
If you are a die-hard Cadillac fan after a stylish, tech-loaded electric SUV, the Optiq might just be the ticket. As long as, of course, the budget is not an issue. But if you prioritize performance above anything else, the Model Y is the better option. And don’t forget that a few thousand more can buy the much bigger and faster Cadillac Lyriq. Choices, choices…
Let’s not judge the Optiq just yet. It will be available later this year, and it is well worth waiting for the first reviews to get a full picture of where the new Cadillac fits in the electric SUV landscape. Maybe the Optiq will surprise us all, and perhaps Cadillac will revise its pricing or throw in some offers. The good news is the U.S. version of the Optiq will be made in Mexico, and at $54,000, it just manages to qualify for the federal EV tax credit. However, the amount will depend on where the battery materials will come from.
