Cadillac Optiq

Cadillac Optiq Will Offer Up To 373 Miles Of Range In China

While the rollout of American electric vehicles in the U.S. takes place at a relatively leisurely pace, it is an entirely different story in China. Buick is leading the charge with its Electra E4 and Electra E5 selling like hot dumplings.

It seems Cadillac decided to join the party and unveiled the Optiq for the Chinese market. With a very attractive range, decent powertrains, and affordable pricing, Optiq looks to steal some Chinese customers away from Western brands.

Screen Galore And Light-up Grille

Let’s start with the interior for change. Cadillac’s new curved screen stretches to a serious 33 inches. While it sounds like a lot, somehow, the designers avoided it looking out of place, and the screen just blends in very nicely with the rest of the upmarket cabin. Everything else is as you would expect of the Cadillac—top-notch upholstery, ambient lighting, and a sumptuous interior that is classy but also restrained.

Then there’s the grille, which is fitted with 114 LEDs responsible for a lightshow that wouldn’t be out of place at any New Year’s party. Whenever you open the door or unlock the car, the front lights up in various sequences, ensuring that no person could miss the fact that you arrived in a Cadillac.

Plenty Of Range And Just Enough Power

One thing is for sure: the Cadillac Optiq won’t be breaking any speed records. Two versions are coming to China, with the entry-level model fitted with a single electric motor pushing 245 horsepower. The 243 pound-feet of torque will have its work cut out when dealing with the nearly 190-inch-long crossover.

Thankfully, there is a dual-motor version, but the power bump is surprisingly timid. The two electric motors develop 287 horsepower combined, and the torque goes up to 343 pound-feet, meaning the 0 to 60 mph sprint should take just under 7 seconds. Not really a hair-raising experience, but Optiq was designed to cover the distance in comfort rather than at speed.

There are two battery options to help the smallest electric Cadillac achieve a decent range. The smaller 68.4 kWh pack offers 333 miles, and the larger 79.7 kWh battery takes the range up to 373 miles. That’s on the good side of average. Still, we must remember that those are estimates according to the overly optimistic CLTC cycle.

Quick Charging And Price That Won’t Break The Bank

Chinese customers will be happy to know that the Optiq can recharge its batteries from 10% to 80% in just over half an hour. Since China runs on 220V, a 7.2 kW charger can be installed at home. In that case, complete recharging takes between 11 and 13 hours, depending on the battery size.

Cadillac is serious about its debut in China, and it equips the Optiq with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane centering. The standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and even OnStar service. The top-of-the-range model comes with Super Cruise installed as well. All that is available for a seriously affordable $33,000 for the entry-level model, while the long-range variant starts at just over $37,000. Don’t we wish we had the Optiq over here…
