Chinese Supercar Yangwang U9 To Take On Goodwood
Something big and wickedly fast is about to cross the pond, and it wants to reshape the world of high-performance electric vehicles. BYD’s new fiery sub-brand Yangwang is sending its flagship U9 supercar to the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this summer.
Meet China’s New Electric Speed Demon
Yangwang may not sound like an automotive name. In fact, it sounds like something you order at a noodle bar, but this isn’t your usual Lo Mein. Launched in early 2023, it uses BYD’s latest “e4” platform, with four electric motors sending power to each corner of this futuristic two-seater.
The numbers are frankly astonishing – 1,287 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to wrap the asphalt into pretzels and twist the driveshafts into spaghetti. Despite the ridiculous power output, the 0 to 62 mph sprint takes 2.36 seconds – not slow by any standards. Still, Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid make better use of their power.
Goodwood Is Where Auto Legends Are Born
If you have never heard of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we gotta ask: Where have you been hiding? It is like the Olympics for car fanatics. Every year, gearheads from all over the world descend on this unassuming English country estate with just one goal in mind. To watch all kinds of automotive marvels – modern, historical, and futuristic – tearing up the iconic hill with everything they’ve got. They push the boundaries and quite often exceed them. A soft landing in the pile of hay marks those whose enthusiasm triumphed over the skills.
It’ll be the first time a Chinese automaker will attempt the coveted hill climb. Will Yangwang attempt to set a new record for electric cars? That’ll be a tough undertaking, but you must admit the Chinese are ambitious and never walk away from a challenge.
Whatever the outcome, come this July the world will be introduced to Yangwang U9, an electric supercar with power and tech to match the best brands out there. Every year, more and more electric cars are coming to Goodwood to prove their mantle, and every year, the bar goes up higher. It’s a strange experience, watching an electric car flying past at ridiculous speed, with only the whoosh of wind, hum of the tires, and a faint whine of electric motors. But the world is changing, and electric cars are slowly taking over.
