This Safety Car Has Twice The Power Of Formula E Cars
Electric cars keep breaking performance barriers, and the latest Formula E safety car is no exception. With an outrageous amount of horsepower and a rear wing big enough to double as a lunch table, coming to a track near you — the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.
The latest Formula E cars, Gen 3, are a far cry from the unpolished first generation that was first introduced in 2014. These sleek electric rockets pump up 469 horsepower in the boost mode, with continuous power output set at 402 horsepower. And yet, they may have their work cut out trying to keep up with the safety car.
Electric Safety Car For Electric Races
The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT redefines performance. Built on the ‘civilian’ Taycan Turbo, the GT cranks 777 horsepower out of its electric motors. At a press of a button, the power shoots up to 1,019 horsepower and stays there for 10 seconds. That’s enough for the GT to fly past the quarter-mile mark at full pelt and stop.
The extra power on tap is called “Attack Mode,” and it has been inspired by similar technology used by Porsche in its own 99X Formula E racers. But making the most powerful Taycan ever wasn’t enough for Porsche. It had to replace the Turbo S, which had been on Formula E safety car duty since 2019.
This Is Not Your Standard Taycan
Aside from the substantial power hike, the Taycan Turbo GT has undergone a complete overhaul. The race-ready Weissech package takes care of aerodynamics, suspension, brakes, and the rear seats. That’s right — if you want to buy the GT, you can ask for the rear seats to be removed — free of charge.
Speaking of buying the GT, the price is as high as you would expect from Porsche. At $248,685, it isn’t exactly cheap, nor is it affordable. But the 0 to 60 mph sprint time of just 2.2 seconds will put a smile on your face — permanently. Add the likely exclusivity of it, and this purple demon shouldn’t have too much trouble finding buyers.
Formula E is getting two GTs to perform safety car duties. One will be Purple Sky Metallic with Weissach kit, while the other will have a standard four-seat interior and be finished in Shade Green metallic. Of course, both cars will be fitted with the compulsory warning lights, comms, and fire extinguishers.
