Volkswagen Goes For Electric Pitstop With Plug-In Hybrids
While many people thought hybrids were yesterday’s news, it seems plug-in hybrids are making a comeback. There are enough people out there hesitant to make a straight swap for electric cars, and the word on the street is that Volkswagen is paying attention. PHEVs are here to stay.
The Volkswagen PHEV Power Play
Volkswagen quietly revealed it is developing a clever plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a 1.5-liter gas-powered engine, an electric motor, and a whopping 19.7 kWh battery. Volkswagen claims this will give it a decent 62 miles of pure-electric range. You can choose from 204 or 272 horsepower, depending on how spicy you like your ride.
Charging is usually an after-thought exercise when it comes to PHEVs, but Volkswagen is addressing this issue head-on. AC charging supports up to 11 kW, which means if you have a correct home charger, you can juice up the new system in about 2 hours. Fast-charging at a DC charger should take less than half an hour, courtesy of the on-board 50 kW support.
Tiguan To Be The PHEV Pioneer
For now, the plug-in hybrids are exclusive to Europe, and there’s no word when they will be making their way across the pond. The Tiguan SUV is getting a refresh pretty soon, though, and it would be a perfect opportunity for Volkswagen to bring the new PHEV powertrain to America. After all, Tiguan already has a PHEV version that’s doing well.
According to VW’s boss, the US-spec Tiguan PHEV is in the works, but as with everything these days, paperwork is taking its sweet time. Once the legalities are all sorted out, we will enjoy guilt-free electric miles with the side of gas-powered reassurance for those longer adventures.
Look, electric cars are the endgame, there’s no argument there. But plug-in hybrids may be the clever way to get more people off the fence and into those electrified cars. And once they’re in, well – it’ll be hard to pull them out. Volkswagen knows that and is ready to take advantage of this opportunity.
